National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine
Department for Surgery and Pathophysiology
We have already equipped four institutes in Kiev with humane teaching materials, which is how Dr Jury Kharkevich, Head of the Department of Surgery and Pathophysiology at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences, Kyiv, found out about our project from colleagues at the Nemishaevskiy College of Agricultural Engineering.
At Dr Kharkevych's department, 340 animals (frogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and mice) have so far been subjected to the worst pathophysiological experiments every year. Burns caused by electricity on rabbits, damage caused by acids and alkalis, dehydration, oedema and the consequences of inflammation on frogs and other cruelties have been inflicted and observed on living animals.
Dimitrij Leporskij had to do some convincing. The conservative dean in particular, deeply rooted in the old way of thinking, had no interest in computers. However, he will soon be retiring and pressure from the younger lecturers prompted him to finally agree to the contract.
The agreement was signed on 24 May 2018. All animal experiments will be discontinued from 1 September 2018. The interactive pathophysiology programme in Russian ‘Virtual Pathophysiology’, which we financed and completed in early 2018, came at just the right time and proved to be extremely helpful. Otherwise, it would have been difficult to offer adequate teaching materials for this course.

Control visit
The control visit took place on 15 April 2019. Dr Jury Kharkevich was very satisfied with the modern teaching materials, which have made it possible to replace all animal experiments in the curriculum.
